The Hypocrisy of DH Griffin

September 20, 2011

Ed Cone at Word Up brings news that Gate City Waste Services has withdrawn its bid to reopen the White Street Landfill:

I am writing on behalf of Gate City Waste Services (Gate City) to respectfully request that our bid for the referenced services at White Street Landfill be terminated. As a lifelong resident and businessman in this community I had sincerely hoped to do something positive for the White Street Landfill neighborhoods, and the people of Greensboro. Those actions no longer appear possible.

Are you fucking kidding me? This goon has been responsible for a hidden agenda involving Greensboro mayor Bill Knight and councilmembers Danny Thompson, Mary Rakestraw and Trudy Wade which has incensed the citizens for months and resulted in three lawsuits, each of which was won by the opponents.

I saw D.H. Griffin, Jr. in the paper Sunday, giving a metal cross from the 9/11 site to a local church. As far as I’m concerned, the Griffins have behaved abysmally toward the citizens of Greensboro. They know what they can do with their metal crosses.

Now that these bullies have been defeated once and for all, I want to know what was done to influence the mini-majority. I agree with councilman, Robbie Perkins, that an investigation into this matter is warranted. The proponents on council of this sleazy deal would do well to confess their sins. Otherwise, the consequences will certainly be felt at the ballot box, and possibly in a court of law.

I’d like to thank Chris Brook and the SCSJ for their heroic defense of the beleaguered citizens living near the landfill. It is encouraging to know that East Greensboro not only has many friends in our city, but throughout the state as well.

It will be interesting to see whether the mini-majority attempts to go forward by entering into a deal with Waste Industries. I’m betting that whatever GCWS held over the gang of four in no way applies to another vendor. D.H. Griffin, Sr. has shown himself to be a vindictive old man and would never countenance a competitor being awarded a contract he had lost.

Lest you doubt his villainy, watch how GCWS behaves in their attempt to create a new landfill in Rockingham County.

GCWS is hoping that withdrawing their bid will make this whole thing go away, quietly. Who knows what an investigation might uncover.

Griffin doth protest too much, methinks.

So the DH Griffin empire doesn’t grow as large as it could. They are still laughing their way to the bank each day.

As Robbie Perkins’ meeting telegraphed, their expertise will prove invaluable as we continue to move through the landfill process. There’s no telling what they might have come away with had they not been so secretive, in a hurry and heavy handed.

I’ve seen this trick before. At least 2 and possibly 3 of the companies that prepared the original RFPs are owned in-part by DH Griffin.

    Think about it.

The 2 I’m sure of are GCWS and A-1 Sandrock.

I admit I haven’t followed this closely, and that I’m a bit dense, but is there a connection between GCWS and Griffin?

That GCWS has acted badly I get, but what did DH Griffin to wrong?

DH Griffin is a partner in GCWS. As the local entity in the company, they were responsible for the misbegotten strategy which infuriated the citizens and ultimately led to failure. DH Griffin has many friends in Greensboro and could have gone about this much differently, but instead chose to leverage those relationships in ways that as yet remain unknown to the public.

        Ah! Thanks.
