Marriage Sunday

April 12, 2012

Vote FOR Marriage NC has rolled out a comprehensive kit for the social retards to use in canvassing voters, preaching sermons, early voting, using Facebook and Twitter in support of NC Amendment One on May 8th. We’ve just got to take a peek at those sample sermons.

From The Mystery of Marriage by Albert Mohler:

[B]ecause of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

That’s certainly one opinion, and even if it shared by those with a biblical worldview, I don’t see why we all should be force to subscribe to it.

From Fulfilling Our Cultural Mandate by Richard Land:

When government fails to fulfill its commission, God holds it accountable, and He calls on His people to engage with it. A society where people are given the responsibility to choose their leaders is accountable to God for the leadership they have. In the same way that a parent is responsible for the behavior of his children, so citizens in a democracy are responsible before God for the behavior of their leaders and the culture that results from that leadership, whether good or bad.

I have no problem with evangelism, where I have the ability to turn away. Here, however, we have the biblical seeds of Christian Reconstructionism, a virulent and arrogant attempt to subvert the will of the people with the supposed will of God in acts of governance.

There are a lot more sermons, a video and a podcast, but that’s about all I can stand. Nowhere did I read of the need to accept the wishes and beliefs of others. It’s either their way or the highway. Rampant xenophobia creates a primitive binary mindset of us and them, where they are righteous in God’s eyes and we are sinful in our ignorance. Such thinking is an affront to the Age of Enlightment which “promoted science and intellectual interchange and opposed superstition, intolerance and abuses in church and state.” Indeed, contrary to the lies of contemporary Christians, our nation was founded on its principles.

Currently, enlightenment leads us to understand that homosexuality is not a sin, but a naturally occurring phenomenon found everywhere in nature. Rather than being discriminated against, demonized and abused as different, homosexuals should be revered as the special people they represent. It is not as though they are somehow less intelligent or perverted. In fact, some of the greatest advances in human history were made by people who preferred those of their own kind. To be sure, the worst abuses have been committed by male heterosexuals.

It is obvious to those of us who value all our brethren that the Christian fundamentalists give us no choice but leave them behind in the pursuit of a more just society. I’m going to keep saying this because it is true: just as they seek to demonize those not like them with hatred and lies, so then must we judge the social retards as evildoers. Life is hard and we have difficult choices to make. The easiest one is to disregard those who go out of their way to unnecessarily make life harder, especially for those who are already suffering the most.

The fundies cling jealously to their biblical worldview and deny the rest of us any use of its tenets. However, the world we currently inhabit was largely built on biblical precepts taken in moderation. One of the greatest of these is the notion that whatever we do, compassion must be present for the protection of the least of us. Perhaps, in some instances we have done too much for the disadvantaged and made them slaves to our assistance. But I contend it is much better to foster some dependence than to turn away from those who lack the basic necessities altogether, lest someone get too much.

And that is why the moderates should rule. Having both horizons of the political landscape in sight offers the most accurate viewpoint. Moderates are hated by the zealots, and in my case their disdain is often returned. Polarized times such as these naturally give rise to moderate zealots who revile the right wing fundamentalists, but still understand whence they come. They also have a kinship with those on the left who rightly seek to assist the unfortunate and support education, science and the arts.

In this case, enlightened moderates understand that NC Amendment One is a bad referendum which needlessly harms innocent citizens. The challenge is to inform sufficient numbers of their own kind and those on the left to defeat the fundies who, in a national backlash against the election which ushered in Obama and gave us a majority of right wing zealots, injudiciously put forth this ill-considered legislation.

As we have seen with diabolical tactics used by organizations such as the National Organization for Marriage, the right has been their own worst enemy. If NC Amendment One does not pass, they will have themselves to blame. And it is with these kinds of legislative over-reach, and the inane attempts to support them, that the rest of us have been edified as to the true nature and impending peril represented by the right wing authoritarians. Just as the oligarchs have surely put us on the path to totalitarianism, so have the fundies raised the terrible specter of fascism. While I have no hope that we can stop the former from becoming a reality, there is no reason why we can’t defeat the latter and consign them to political irrelevancy for at least a generation.

I saw that. They’ve lost yet another leg to stand on.
