Billy Graham is a Confused Old Man

May 2, 2012

From Martha Waggoner at HuffPo:

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Rev. Billy Graham urged North Carolina voters Wednesday to support an amendment to the state constitution banning gay marriage, a move that an observer said was highly unusual but another said was in keeping with the minister’s moral beliefs.

“Watching the moral decline of our country causes me great concern,” said Graham, 93, who lives near Asheville. “I believe the home and marriage is the foundation of our society and must be protected.”

His complete statement about Amendment One will be part of full-page ads slated to appear in 14 North Carolina newspapers throughout the weekend.

Franklin Graham should be ashamed of himself for soiling his father’s legacy by using him to advance hatred and intolerance. We already have a statute defining marriage as between a man and a woman. The proposed amendment would also proscribe civil unions and is the primary point of contention by those who oppose it.

This action marks the end of Franklin Graham’s career as a preacher of love and mercy. Whatever the outcome, he will forever be remembered for tarnishing the name of his father unnecessarily.

For me this is a very sad moment. The greatest evangelical of the twentieth century has been hoodwinked in his dotage into supporting a vile piece of legislation which I believe he would have opposed when he was in his prime.

This is not the Billy Graham I remember.

No, but it is the Billy Graham our parents remember. He had to get some age on him (and, I think, have the stars scraped from his eyes by Watergate) before he mostly stopped being a dick. Had I been old enough to be paying attention back in his early heyday, rather than learning about it only after he’d already become an elder statesman, I’m not sure whether any amount of later atonement on his part would have satisfied me.

That’s consistent with what his biographer said.
