Obama’s Big Lie

May 24, 2012

From Abigail Field at Reality Check:

President Obama wants you to believe that the mortgage settlement pushed down the throats of the few Democratic AGs trying to stand up for the public, pushed by Obama’s Justice Department and Obama’s Department of Housing and Urban Development, is proof that Obama’s “given the housing issue priority.” (The hold out AGs are not blameless; they picked party over policy at a time when all Americans needed them not to.) Regular readers of this blog know how misleading that claim is. What Obama gave priority to was resolving the bankers’ liability for their massive criminality in exchange for a headline with a big sounding, meaningless number…

[T]he bankers bought a huge liability release with their fake $26 billion. How much, we still don’t know, because as ever, actions mean so much more than words. That is, the deal has some limits on how much peace the bankers bought but if the unreleased illegality isn’t prosecuted, it’s released too, for free. So far we have yet to see a major lawsuit or even a tiny indictment follow (or precede) the settlement, and there’s no reason to think any is coming, pr about the task force notwithstanding. But wait, major liability releases aren’t the only thing the bankers got for that one low, low price. They also won the right to steal from everyone who has a mortgage, as long as they don’t steal too much. But wait, that’s not all! The bankers get to keep faking documents too! The mortgage settlement is an enforcement fraud, through and through…

The Obama administration hasn’t put any handcuffs on the financial meltdown bankers. (Team Obama has arrested and incarcerated peaceful protesters, however.) Nor does the “securitization task force” it keeps pushing as proving real commitment to the rule of law prove anything of the sort…

The most politically opportune time to drop an indictment Justice has no hope of winning unless you plow far more resources into the effort? Hmmm, is that October? Or in September, just before you accept the Democratic Party’s nomination in Bank of America Stadium?…

Other examples are Obama’s refusal to reinstate Glass-Steagall, although that law is key to ending bailout nation; his opposition to mortgage cramdowns in bankruptcy, which would have dramatically helped underwater homeowners if done a few years ago; his delivering on the TARP promises to bankers, but completely failing to deliver on the TARP promises to homeowners; and… the list is much too long for one post.

Add to those Obama‘s complete disregard for individual liberty by condoning suspension of habeas corpus and due process, illegal assassination, domestic wiretapping and torture, and there’s no way I can vote for him. Of course, I can’t vote for Romney, either. Perhaps I’ll write in my own name or not cast a vote at all. I am comforted by the notion that all politics are local and just as well.

I know of no way to say it better than Abigail did.
A little comic relief:”A biography of President Obama used by his literary agent for years says Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii. When reached for comment, the administration explained that the president’s birthplace is ‘evolving.’ It’s weird, Obama said he was born in Hawaii, his literary agent says he was born in Kenya, and yet the liberal media still claim he was born in a manger.” –NewsBusted’s Jodi Miller

I would guess it might be the twenty-somethings, or maybe even the generation directly after them that could exert the pushback on the political system to the point that is needed to bring contemporary versions of Glass-Steagal back.

At any rate, I think it’ll be a looooong slog.
