Art Pope’s Stooge on Voter ID
Sam Hieb at Piedmont Publiass can steal links provided by others, but apparently is too fucking stupid to construct his own.
From the excerpted Jim Tynen at Civitass on Phil Berger:
A voter ID would have to have a photo and meet constitutional requirements, Berger said, and he said he thought the GA could accomplish that. An observation: On this matter he seemed very matter of fact, which to my mind is a stronger prediction than other politicians’ feverish rhetoric on whatever issue.
He too pointed out how not having an ID would be a major problem for anyone. By the end of March this year all federal benefits will be distributed electronically. That means you must have a bank account or the equivalent — and you are required to have a photo ID to open an account.
In other words, as we have been saying, anyone who truly cares about the ill or destitute will make every effort to ensure they have photo IDs, just to get in the social safety net, with voting as a bonus.
The cruel cynicism and political idiocy of that statement are mind-boggling. The standard reason the Tea Party has given in the past is Voter ID is necessary to prevent fraud, when in fact they are attempting to deny suffrage to the poor, minorities, the disabled and the aged. Now that they have a majority in the NC legislature, they are actually coming out and saying it. The assumption that those without voter ID are on public assistance betrays an evil mindset that has no business representing anyone, even rich white men. To actually say it is another act of racist wilding, not unlike the recent announcement of highly regressive tax reform.
Make no mistake: Sam Hieb and his hateful blog are the local mouthpiece for Art Pope, The Civitass Institute and the John Locke Foundation which are hell-bent on redress of perceived grievances by NC progressives. If a way is not found to stop them, much needless suffering will occur to the least of us who have already borne more than their fair share.
To translate Fec’s elevated prose into street talk, he means that by 2016 North Carolina will look like Mississippi. And he’s right.
No shit, buddy.
